I DIG it!
Great blog read it in reverse order ;~) I am planning on getting a malmute later in the year. Love your web site down to earth yet wonderfully rich.
I am thinking of getting a female malamute to start with a view to training her for search and rescue, agility, show as well as being a family pet though all the above depends on what she enjoys doing. Maybe getting a second later with a look at mushing.
As one of the best resources I have found I would look at importing from you but we have a 30day quarantine period from the US which to my mind just seems to long for a puppy.
I have really enjoyed how you take the time to talk about the puppies personalities But when I look at the size of the NZ market due to the ltd breeders I worry a bit about diversity in the blood lines. While not necessary planning on breeding it is an option I would be happy to pay more for with the option to reserve till later depending on how she turns out.
With that in mind do you know of any breeders from UK, Republic of Ireland, Singapore, Hawaii, Norway, Sweden and Australia, possibly NZ. As from these countries I can import from 8 weeks without the custom stop over.
She will be a house dog with full access to the yard though the yard will not be ready for the next couple of months. So I am currently searching for suitable breeders. Though I realise my wait could then just be starting its something I want to try and get right.
I have grown up with old English mastifs, and the wife has had a staffordshire bull terrier. Though currenly dog less while loving the other dogs and after many years its my turn.
Any guidence would be greatly appreciated. Though if you dont know anybody keep up the great web site and I will keep reading.
Thanks
Mark

I received a copy of your book Malamute Man from my daughter Christine and her Husband Daryl Griffin. I want to thank you for sharing some of your adventures with me and the many readers of your book. Daryl has told me about some of your trips. As you wrote in your book, but in my words, it is sad that some people are not truly recognized for the greatness of their lifes adventures. I am glad that you have made your dreams a reality and been blessed with health and strength to live your life dreams. Thank you again. George Andersen
Thank you so much, George. I’m glad you enjoyed the book and thank you for your support. Your daughter and son-in-law are wonderful people and we’ve been blessed to have them both as our friends, as well as your beautiful grandkids! -Andrea
WHY would you want to experience -80 below in the most severe, unforgiving environment on earth, the Arctic ??? I have been getting asked that a lot the past few weeks as I get ready for my expedition with Joe. When I answer I am not sure anybody hears, because they have that bovine look on their face, trying to detect the first signs of insanity or senility in my face !!! I don’t necessarily want to experience that, but it comes with the territory. What I want to experience once in my life, “bucket list” thing I guess, is a few days with some Alaskan Malamutes totally in their element, still doing what they started doing thousands of years ago. The scenery, physical & mental challenge and time with someone like Joe are all incredible extras for the trip. This I would only do with someone like Joe Henderson . I have been reading and rereading their website and blogs since I signed up over 12 months ago, every word, and just finished his book, “Malamute Man.” His experiences, incidents with predators, blizzards, open water, etc., make me wonder, “did my mom & dad raise a dummy?” In his book on page 138 it says: “March’s rich blue skies and bright sun made up for all the blizzards. “So I’m going with that, it takes the sting out of 99 below, brutal and invigorating!! A friend in Anchorage suggested I start sleeping on the picnic table in the nude to get used to the temps!! My wife Barb offered to hold a fan on me to simulate the wind chill !! So that’s what my friends and wife think of my idea !
I have a footnote on my emails that reads, “Mals stopped their own evolution in its tracks several thousand years ago, when they looked back at their ancestors, and decided, this is far enough for us !! Maximus(my 7 yr old male mal)
We currently have 4 rescue mals and our 12 year old yellow lab, the therapy girl for the ones recovering from a rough start with the wrong people.
